BCIP (5-Bromo-4-chloro-3-indoxyl phosphate, disodium salt) is the most widely used chromogenic phosphatase substrate, which forms a dark blue (λ<sub>max</sub> 615 nm) precipitate on enzymatic hydrolysis.
